Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from the socket in the jaw bone.
The process of tooth extraction typically involves the following steps:
- Consultation: A dentist will examine your mouth and take x-rays to determine the location and condition of the tooth to be extracted. They will discuss with you the recommended treatment plan, and the options available after the extraction.
- Anesthesia: Depending on the location and severity of the tooth, the dentist may administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth, or in some cases, a general anesthetic to put you to sleep during the procedure.
- Loosening The Tooth: The dentist will use special instruments to loosen the tooth from the socket. This may involve making small cuts in the gum tissue to access the tooth.
- Removing The Tooth: Once the tooth is loose, the dentist will gently remove it from the socket.
- Stitching: If necessary, the dentist will stitch the extraction site to help the healing process.
- Follow-Up: The patient will need to have regular follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and to ensure that the extraction site is healing properly.
It’s important to note that tooth extraction may be recommended for a variety of reasons, such as tooth decay, gum disease, infection, injury, or to make space for orthodontic treatment. Also, tooth extraction may cause some pain and discomfort during the healing process, but it can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and by following the dentist’s post-operative instructions.
It’s also worth mentioning that after tooth extraction, there are different options available to replace the missing tooth such as dental implants, bridges or dentures.
