Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The most common treatment provided by orthodontists is the use of braces, which are devices that apply gentle pressure to the teeth to move them into proper alignment. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to improve the patient’s bite and create a straight, healthy, and attractive smile.
- Consultation: The first step is to consult with an orthodontist to determine if you are a good candidate for treatment. The orthodontist will examine your teeth and jaws, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment options with you.
- Diagnosis and treatment planning: The orthodontist will use the information gathered during the consultation to diagnose any problems and develop a treatment plan.
- Appliance placement: If braces are the chosen treatment, the orthodontist will place the brackets and wires on your teeth. Clear aligners or other clear orthodontic appliances will be fabricated with the help of 3D printing technology and will be placed in the mouth.
- Periodic adjustment: The orthodontist will schedule regular appointments (typically every 4-8 weeks) to adjust the braces and monitor the progress of treatment.
- Retention: Once the teeth have been moved into their proper positions, the orthodontist will remove the braces and may recommend the use of a retainer to help keep the teeth in their new positions.
- Follow-up: After the treatment, the orthodontist will schedule follow-up appointments to ensure that the teeth are staying in their new positions and to address any concerns.
The duration of treatment depends on the complexity of the case and can range from 18 months to 2 years. The patient will also be instructed on how to maintain oral hygiene during the treatment and proper care for the appliances.
