Pocket Reduction
Pocket reduction, also known as periodontal pocket reduction, is a dental procedure used to treat periodontal disease, which is an infection of the gums and surrounding structures that support the teeth. The procedure is used to reduce the depth of periodontal pockets, which are spaces that form between the gums and teeth as a result of gum disease.
The process of pocket reduction typically involves the following steps:
- Anesthesia: The gums are numbed using a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
- Scaling And Root Planning: The dentist or periodontist will use specialized instruments to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the teeth and the roots.
- Pocket Reduction: The dentist or periodontist will then use special instruments, such as ultrasonic scalers or hand instruments, to remove the infected tissue and smooth the roots of the teeth. This helps to reduce the depth of the periodontal pockets and encourage healthy tissue growth.
- Tissue Regeneration: Depending on the case, regenerative procedures like Bone Grafting, Guided Tissue Regeneration or Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD) may be added to the procedure to further support the healing process.
- Post-Operative Care: After the procedure, the patient will be given instructions on how to care for their teeth and gums at home, including instructions on proper oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing, to help prevent infection and promote healing.
The procedure is usually done in one or more visits to the dentist, and the recovery time is usually short.
It is important to note that pocket reduction is usually a part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes regular maintenance, such as periodontal cleanings, to maintain the health of the gums and teeth.
